REGISTERED THERMOWOOD® PRODUCER “NASWOOD”

Nasthermowood production is carried out in accordance with established procedures and original technical requirements under an independent quality-control system. Naswood is one of only 15 organizations worldwide holding a Thermowood production certificate. Not every heat-treated wood product is Thermowood®.

Our Thermowood production facility is located in Ula, Muğla, at our factory built on a 15,000 m² site with 9,500 m² of enclosed space.

The Thermowood process is a specialized treatment used to create timber with enhanced properties. By modifying wood using steam and heat, it develops natural and improved characteristics. People working with timber have carried out research and development for many years to improve its performance.

In the 1990s, Finnish scientists developed the Thermowood® method, which provides some of today’s most advanced modified-timber products. Through a natural transformation caused by controlled heat treatment, Thermowood products gain enhanced properties and become significantly more stable and more resistant to decay and weather conditions than untreated timber.

Because Thermowood is produced by natural methods without chemicals and provides timber with a longer service life, it is also a healthy material for human environments. During treatment, glucose, resin and citric-acid compounds are reduced, giving the timber high biological durability. The Thermowood method minimizes physical movement such as twisting, expansion and shrinkage, helping the timber achieve improved dimensional stability.

Controlled, formulated processing provides consistent color throughout the piece. The heat-treated product is lighter, which reduces the load it places on façades, and its lower thermal conductivity provides strong thermal-insulation performance.

The Thermowood® process may only be carried out by producers authorized by the International ThermoWood Association, and only these organizations may use the Thermowood® trademark.

NASTHERMOWOOD PRODUCTION PROCESS

The ThermoWood method is licensed to members of the International ThermoWood Association.

The ThermoWood process consists of three main stages

Stage 1:

Drying

Using heat and water vapor, the kiln temperature is rapidly raised to 100°C. Then the temperature is continuously increased to 130°C, during which high-temperature drying is carried out and the moisture content of the timber is reduced to almost zero.

Stage 2:

High-Temperature Heat Treatment

After the Stage 1 drying process, the kiln temperature is raised to between 185°C and 212°C. Once the target temperature is reached, it is held constant for 2–3 hours depending on the intended end-use application.

Stage 3:

Cooling and Conditioning

In the final stage, the temperature is lowered using water-spray systems. When the temperature reaches 80–90°C, the timber is re-moisturized to bring its moisture content to a usable level of approximately 4–7%. The conditioning process is then completed.

Thermo S

  • For Thermo S products, the Thermowood® process is carried out at 185–190°C. NasThermowood recommends Thermo S products for building components, wall and ceiling panels in dry conditions, furniture, door and window components, sauna products, flooring, cladding and shutters.

Thermo D

  • For Thermo D products, the Thermowood® process is carried out at 205–220°C. NasThermowood recommends Thermo D products for exterior wall cladding and decking, exterior joinery, shutters, sound barriers, sauna/bathroom furniture, garden furniture and other outdoor construction requirements.
  • The dimensional properties of timber are preserved in the best possible way.
  • After the Thermowood process, the color of the timber is preserved as close as possible to its natural appearance.
  • The Thermowood process is environmentally friendly and healthy.
  • Thermowood timber is more practical and longer-lasting than untreated timber.
  • Thermowood is resistant to demanding weather conditions and suitable for exterior façade applications.
  • Thermowood provides greater sound and thermal insulation than untreated timber.

NASTHERMOWOOD

To manufacture Thermowood®, a company must be an official producer of the International ThermoWood Association and must also possess the strong infrastructure and technology required for production. As an official producer of the Association, Naswood carries out its thermally modified timber production under the NasThermowood brand. Thermowood® production takes place at the group’s Muğla factory, which is built on more than 15,000 m² of land and has approximately 10,000 m² of enclosed area. NasThermowood is also monitored through an independent quality-control system and supplies Thermowood® products in accordance with established procedures and original technical requirements. With its strong investments and technology, it has become one of the leading companies in the sector. Formulation and consistent quality are of great importance throughout the Thermowood® process. With this awareness, Naswood manages its human-resources and quality-management policies in line with international standards and organizes regular training sessions and workshops.
